TV Crush

Posted by Mary McNamara on December 31, 2008

I'm on Comcast Cable, fortunately, hence sheltered from the latest Viacom/Time Warner Cable dust-up.  (For background, click here to read Todd Spangler's article on Multichannel.)

However, apparently Viacom has decided to drag ALL cable viewers through the mud of their dispute with Time Warner.  Last night, while I was minding my own business here in Marin County and watching Viacom-owned Palladia HD (part of MTV Networks), an annoying and disruptive message began crawling across the bottom of the screen.

When the first few words of the crawl appeared, I thought Marin County was under some sort of dire weather alert.

Here's what the crawl said.  Exclamation points etc. are theirs.

Oh, snap! Craig Ferguson, host of CBS Network's Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson, mocks NBC Entertainment co-chair Ben Silverman.

(Thanks to Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan for her tweety alert to Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily blog.)

This is why we love SNL's Andy Samberg and his writing crew, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer aka The Lonely Island.  Their first album, "Incredibad," is due out in February.  Here's a single off the album.  Yeah, I know, a little raunchy.  But it's funny.  Actress/model Molly Sims, Sopranos vet. Jamie Lynn Sigler and Justin Timberlake guest.

The NBC Universal mess inspires poetry:

POPE AND WEINBERG ARE GONE.
BUT THE JEFF & BEN SHOW GOES ON?
FOR THIS WRECK OF A TRAIN,
I SHOUT THIS REFRAIN:
“PUT A FORK IN THE PEACOCK, IT’S DONE!”

The multi-talented Jon Hamm - who earned an Emmy nom. for Outstanding Lead Actor in a drama series for his nuanced portrayal of ad executive Don Draper in Mad Men - will guest star on NBC's 30 Rock for at least three episodes.

The news wasn't unexpected after Hamm's fabulous comedic turn on SNL six weeks ago.  (Hamm might be the new Alec Baldwin, destined to host SNL again and again.  Click here for clips and my review of Hamm's appearance.)

According to TV Squad:  "And this isn't one of those one-shot deals. Hamm will actually be on [30 Rock] for at least three episodes and maybe more. He'll play a doctor who lives in Liz...Read More

Last Tuesday, Stephen Colbert instructed Colbert Nation, his motley army of fans, to descend on iTunes en masse and buy A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All precisely at 2 p.m. PT, Wednesday, December 3.

Colbert was miffed that the Colbert Christmas iTunes ranking of #16 trailed Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreaks - especially since critics, claimed Colbert, had deemed A Colbert Christmas "the most significant thing to happen to Christmas since Jesus."

Dubbing his effort "Operation Humble Kanye," Colbert set out to top the notoriously egotistical Kanye West's latest release.

Well, they did it!!  Colbert N...Read More

shout out to tweetpeep ProgGrrl for the heads-up.

Last summer at press tour, SCI FI Channel taunted teased television critics by showing a clip of the BattleStar prequel, Caprica, starring Eric Stoltz.  We got a bit worked up over the new series after NBC rolled out the red carpet -  flying in the full cast and producers (Ron Moore et. al.) for a panel and letting us mingle during the NBC Universal bash.

EVP of original programming Mark Stern promised a decision would be forthcoming shortly after the net took delivery of the two-hour back-door pilot.  (Click here to read my press tour blog post.)

So, while Fox and CNN were covering American casualties and the continuing firefight at the Taj Hotel (respectively), MSNBC instead aired a vid of "sanitation enforcement agents" caught on tape parking in front of a fire hydrant.  Aaron Barnhart neatly stitched together the collection of segments for your viewing convenience.

For a hard-nosed assessment of MSNBC coverage, click here for the blog of Baltimore Sun's David Zurawik.  (Thanks to Aaron for the link.)

Ana Marie Cox (Wonkette etc.and frequent guest on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show) said this awesome fan letter "made my f*cking day."  Eighth graders (five girls, four boys and one dog) formed a Rachel Maddow/Keith Olbermann fan club in Omaha, Nebraska.  This morning, in a sweet burst of young enthusiasm, they wrote Cox the following note:

The nano-second spread of information on Twitter is scary fast.  The latest: babywearing Moms (which is millions of Moms around the world who cart their babies in harnesses, as commonplace as breastfeeding) are infuriated by the latest Motrin ad titled "We Feel Your Pain."

The controversy erupted on Twitter over the weekend.  Motrin is a Johnson & Johnson product - which is a good thing, since J & J executives may need a hefty supply of it in order to cope with their Monday morning public relations headache.

The ad expresses sympathy for all the back pain and exhaustion caused by babywearing, and encourages Moms to cope by gulping Motrin.

Except that Moms have been wearing their ba...Read More
