Kansas City Intel: Time Warner Navigator Woes "Run Rampant"

December 8, 2007
Kansas City Star television critic Aaron Barnhart posted on his blog (TV Barn) yesterday about Time Warner Navigator breakdowns.

We're not just in Kansas anymore, however.

Comcast customers have issues with their Motorola DVR's.  We reported on some of the customer unrest here.  My Motorola DVR misbehaved; after months of problems and some wrangling, Comcast swapped it out   (Mine has worked flawlessly ever since.)

Tv critic Rob Owen published a litany of Comcast woes and then recently lost his stored programming when his second Comcast DVR finally bit the dust.  Rob describes his frustration here.

Jody Doherty, vice president of public relations and community affairs for Comcast's Three Rivers Region systems, in an e-mail to Rob last December, dismissed Rob's concerns as "isolated incidents."

But perhaps our Comcast experience pales.

Our own Linda Haugsted wrote last April (Rough Seas for Time Warner's Navigator) about problems associated with Time Warner's set-top boxes:

Among the complaints: Set-tops spontaneously reboot after customers begin using the service and, after rebooting, subscribers lose access to most channels; some show up with oddly pixellated pictures; and digital video recorders in the set-tops stop working properly.

In Linda's piece, Time Warner Cable senior vice president of corporate communications Mark Harrad partly blamed the customer but did say codes had been revised, "fixing earlier problems."

Tell that to Aaron Barnhart who wrote at length yesterday about on-going Time Warner troubles in the midwest.  Aaron said he had to return his jinxed "Navigatored HD-DVR to Time Warner for a replacement."

Here are some snippets from Aaron's post, titled "This is an upgrade? Time Warner Navigator woes run rampant."

The trouble started in January, when Time Warner started “upgrading” people's set-top boxes with new software to control the on-screen guide, DVR recording and other features. And then there was the ongoing soap opera with the NFL Network, which wasn't Time Warner's fault (in my opinion) but still resulted in a lot of angry customers wondering why they couldn't get the Packers-Cowboys game Nov. 29....

In January I wrote that Time Warner was rolling out a new menuing system for its cable boxes.  I quoted a local spokesperson who said Navigator had been developed “so we can be more responsive to our customers.” Famous last words.  Since then, customers have flooded Time Warner's help lines, and my mailbox, with horror stories....

Its customers in Lincoln, Neb., also got “upgraded” this year, and the ensuing debacle led the city council there to pass a resolution calling for an investigation.  The city's cable advisory board concluded that Time Warner had “beta-tested” Navigator on the unsuspecting people of Lincoln.

One Kansas City subscriber - gasp! - lost an entire season of unscreened Battlestar Galactica episodes when Time Warner switched his HD-DVR to Navigator.

Time Warner tells Aaron that Navigator performs well with 97% of cable box models.  But I really wonder about these percentages being tossed out to the press.  Many of my closest friends and colleagues have encountered vexing set-top problems.  Coincidence?

C'mon cable industry - you can do better.

UPDATE:  highly recommended.  scroll down and read the comments on Aaron's blog.   Aaron dismantles a blog  chestnut: the "get a life; it's only tv" remark.

Thenew Time Warner Naviator Guide is terrible, compared to the guide they used previously. Enough so, that I would go to another cable service is there was some competition, and may go to a satellite service. One complaint is that the guide (most of the time) does not tell who is in the movies, sometimes not what year it was made, and what kind of movie it is, such as drama, suspense, comedy, musical, sci-fi, etc. You cannot sort movies by theme anymore to find the type of movies you like, to see what is on that day, so, therefore, the guide does you very little good, as you have to go through the whole guide and then look it up in a channel magazine to see what kind of movie it is and who is in it and the year made. Also, the guide is a blurry blue color which is hard on the eyes. It should be converted back to the way it was or you will lose a lot of customers.

I have been with Time Warner for over 20 years with hardly any issues. Then I had an issue about 3 months ago and was told that I needed a new box, never notified that this was a software update from Passport to Navigator. I am now on my 5th box, two service calls and extremely upset. How can you roll out technology that has not been tested! I can't wait until At&t comes to my neighborhood. I will do my best to convert all 600 of my neighbors. Shame on you Time Warner for not admitting of the issues!

I'm about to take my third Navigator-based (Maestro software) HD-DVR back to TWCKC. Phone lines are constantly busy, so trouble-shooting with a rep is next to impossible. This lastest box has: 1/dropped all video (needs re-boot); 2/ intermitant audio drops (requires HDMI cable re-connect); 3/ random aspect ratio changes everytime TV is turned back on; 4/ failed recording jobs. I will attempt to swap for a Passport HD-DVR since I accnot switch to ATT Uverse...yet.

Well it's been seven days since the new Navigator was uploaded into my Scientific Atlanta 8300 cable box. It's now rebooting numerous times every day. Finally called and they remotely rebooted the box. Went on the internet to find out if anyone was complaining. Holy smokes! To my surprise this has been going on for a long time. Having worked in the telecommunications technical support world, I am surprised that there has not been a software patch to fix this problem. Not sure who wrote the Navigator code but I assume there is a lot of pressure on them to fix the problem. It's not a cable box problem because it worked fine until the software was loaded into 8300. I believe it's time for Time Warner to step up to the plate and come clean with their customers and fix this once and for all. If not, a mass exodus of customers will occur and Time Warner will die a slow death.

We just got the POS "upgrade" and now the box likes to reboot. We were fine before this crap.

The Navigator is NOT and upgrade...since you will be losing features like the KEYWORD SEARCH, and others. TWC should stop sending out this lousy upgrade!

Since we got our upgrade, a regular and HD box, both constantly reboot. Never, ever had a problem with either before the 'upgrade'. The UI is a step down from Passport, it looks very beta to me.

Palm Desert CA just got the Navigator a month or so ago, and I cannot express strongly enough how TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE it is. Please, Comcast, AT&T or any cable provider without a dish on the roof -- you've got a waiting market here!

This seems like the kind of thing that our individual state's Attorneys General should get alerted to because this is one of the most widespread consumer frauds I have seen in a long time.

There are so many boards discussing all the issues that seem to be universally occurring wherever this terrible product has been rolled out that after reading all of them, there's really nothing more I can add that hasn't already been said.

I love the comments made by some idiot at TWCKC by the name of Damon Shelby Porter who says that the Navigator works just fine in 97% of homes to which it was pushed out. What's REALLY incredible about that statement is that every single person I know is part of that remaining 3%!! WHAT are the odds of THAT??!!!

While you're looking up your Attorney General's phone number, here's another number you can call. It's the number for the presidential customer advocate at Time Warner's corporate office. (203)328-0600, press 2. Spread the word, spread the number and let our voices be heard. This is NOT acceptable.

I'm from Durham, NC and we were "upgraded" recently. I'm having nothing but the same problems everyone else is having. Calling to complain, I was told the new Navigator system was put in place to support more HD channels coming in August and the software simply required more bandwidth. You can't make this stuff up, folks!

Here is Cary NC I have been dealing with this "upgrade" for about six months. They can put their marketing spin on it all they want, but they definitely did not put the customers interests first on this one. It is in no way an improvement.
My box reboots several times a day and the user interface is totally user UNfriendly.
The damn thing even rebooted while I was attempting to preview an on-demand movie that I was considering renting; Blockbuster got that rental!

I am in Raleigh, NC and am having lots of the same trouble. Trying to watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics a couple of nights ago and suffered through 5 reboots! This is completely unacceptable. I find the software far inferior to the former passport version and the constant reboots are driving me crazy. We have started to look into other options. I am wary of switching to satellite but TWC is our only cable option here so looks like I'm going to be giving it a try. Unless they get their act together I think I'm not the only person who is going to be switching away from TWC.

Hello from Keene, NH TWC did the update last week and folks all around town are having these same issues. Our box kept trying to download and upgrade but wasn't successful. Finally today tech support helped and it's installed but each channel says " NOT AUTHORIZED For ordering information, press info"... I figured out that if you press the pause button and then play the channel will work. Has anyone else had this happen? If so will it go away or do you think I need to try and have the upgrade installed once again. I haven't even attempted to use are DVR yet.
